Parish Pastoral Council Meeting

Thursday, October 14, 2010

Present: Frank Mauro, Laurel Alves, Susana Borges, Don Kelly, John House, Amabile Dal Monte

Absent/Excused: Father Kenneth Uwaoma, Rob Ciemniak

Meeting called to order 7:40 pm

1. Opening Prayer: In Thanksgiving

  • O Give Thanks to the Lord from Psalm 105
  • I Give Thanks from Psalm 138
  • Praise the Lord! From Psalm 111

2. Approval of Minutes

  • Minutes of Thursday, September 9, 2010 were adopted as circulated.
    • Moved by Frank Mauro and seconded by Amabile Dal Monte

3. Correspondence

  • A card from the Parish Bereavement Ministry containing a donation of $500 was received. A card of thanks will be sent to the Parish Bereavement Ministry for this generous donation.
  • An e-mail was received by Susana from Keri McLaren on behalf of the St. Anthony’s School Parent Support Group requesting permission to hold a raffle of a preferred parking spot at the school. The spot would possibly be marked with a sign. It was agreed that this fundraiser would be supported but that the sign must not interfere with snow removal in the winter or parking for funerals. Susana will reply to Keri’s email with this information.

4. Projects(s)/Standing Committees

Winter Snow Clearing:

  • Requests for tender for snow clearing have been sent out to four local contractors. Able Orfao will do the cleaning of the exits, sidewalks, and stairs at the church and school this winter. Rate of pay will be $14 per hour. Cost to be shared by the school and parish.
  • The existing snow blower requires approximately $1000 in repairs. Sears has a Craftsman snow blower for $1200. Susana was to check and make sure that it was between 10 - 12 hp. and to order it if it was.
    • Motion to purchase the new snow blower was moved by Laurel Alves and seconded by Frank Mauro.

Drain Pipes:

  • Frank spoke to Renzo at Zanron about the connecting of the new drain pipes to the drain. Renzo said that he would get the materials together to do this but to date the work is not done. Frank will go to Zanron and see when the work can be expected to be completed. The bill for the work has been paid in full.

Finance:

  • Susana circulated a statement to the end of September for parish finances. Income has been steady but is down from last year at this time.
  • The new Finance Council is a good group of people but are still finding their way. Susana continues to assist them but does not have much experience herself with this aspect of running the parish.

Youth Room:

  • The lights and electrical are complete. John Medeiros is waiting for the heavy rain to stop so he can cut the baseboards outside and then they can be installed.
  • There is still some plaster finish work to be done around the window in the stairwell but this requires scaffolding as it is too dangerous to do the work with just a ladder.
  • Blinds have been purchased for the windows by Paul Cornthwaite.
  • The outside of the building needs to be stuccoed around the windows. Jim Ferguson had been suggested as someone who could do the work. Susana will contact him and see if he would be able to do it.
  • The school is currently able to use the room for band.

Hall Committee:

  • The lights in the back room have been repaired.

Hall Janitor:

  • Maria Viera has resigned as janitor for the church hall. Amabile has cleaned the bathrooms and most of the kitchen. She will continue to look after these two areas until a replacement is found. Don Kelly, Frank Mauro and John House will organize a group to clean and maintain the hall floor.
  • Sydney DaRosa will be asked if she is interested in the job of cleaning the church hall. She is currently out of town looking after her ailing mother and it isn’t known when she will return.
  • Maria gave her services without payment to the parish for a year. In thanks for those services a card of thanks, gift basket and flowers will be given to her on behalf of the parish.

5. Business Arising from Minutes

St. Anthony’s School

  • Special Collection: Council felt it would be alright to have a second collection on February 19/20, 2011 which is the first Sunday of Catholic Education Week. Susana will let the principal Paul Cornthwaite know of the decision.
  • Bus Parking: Marcus Feldoff was checking to see if the power at the parish office was sufficient to plug the bus in for the winter. John will contact Marcus to see what he found.
  • Area Around Storage Shed: It was agreed unanimously by council that the children shouldn’t be in this area and that it was the responsibility of the school to ensure that the children stayed out. John House and Frank Mauro will check the area around the shed and will present to the Parents Council the following:
    • The parish does not have extra funds to purchase a fence at this time and fencing in this area would be in the way for snow clearing in the winter. (Two rolls of chain link would cost $400 plus the cost of wooden posts and fencing staples. Portions of the fence would have to be taken down each winter and put back up once the snow leaves).
    • The equipment stored in the area belongs to Joe Teves who has done a considerable amount of work for the parish at no cost.
    • The children have a large playground and don’t need to be in that area. The school is responsible to see that the children stay away.
    • A temporary marking of the area will be put up to show the children what area to stay out of.

Mass Times Vote Results:

  • Mass times will return to the fall/winter/spring schedule of the past. 62% of ballots cast voted in favour of this change. The change will take place the weekend of October 23/24.

Diocesan Annual Appeal:

  • Current amount pledged from 43 families is $13,250 which is 26% of our goal amount.

Parish Ministry Sign Up:

  • This will take place in November.

Feast of Christ the King:

  • A luncheon will be held after the 11:15 mass on November 21. Beef on a bun and chicken soup will be served. Coffee, tea and juice will be supplied as well. Frank will do the cooking with Don as his assistant. Laurel, John & Don will set up and decorate the hall. Susana will put up sign-up sheets so we will have an approximate idea of the number to expect. The day will be finished with evening prayer, time to be decided at the next meeting.

Parish Mission:

  • At this point no mission is schedule for either Advent or Lent. Susana said it was difficult to find people. It was suggested that she contact Susan Campbell in Prince George for possible ideas.

Pastoral Council Members:

  • Don Kelly has served three years and Frank Mauro has served two terms. It is time to look for more members. Susana will put a notice in the bulletin for people to come forward or to be nominated.
