5. Project(s)/Standing Committees

Maintenance Committee

  • The maintenance committee met on Wednesday, April 14th. Rob Belsham to contact District of Kitimat to have them insert their camera into manhole to determine if there is a blockage and if this is the reason why we are having water issues in the basement.
  • The drainage rocks will be removed from the manholes in preparation for this work.
  • ZanRon has been asked to delay installation of downspouts until May when hopefully this water issue would have been addressed.
  • John Medeiros talked to Brian Wakita of Wakita Construction regarding the extension of the sidewalk from Wakita Avenue to Christ the King Parish. Approximately 58 feet. Cost of the project is $4,000 not including concrete.
  • Borders/perimeters around St. Anthony’s School playground: Paul Cornthwaite has asked that the playground be changed and leveled out. This work would add significant extra costs to the project. Parish council was not in favour of changing the original plans.
  • Need to look for a new place to park the school bus. Location needs to have an electrical plug in. Leveling out an area on the side of the shed near the field may be a good location as it moves the exhaust from the bus away from the Rectory.
  • John Medeiros has solicited quotes from two roofing companies in Kitimat and (Terrace). Ed’s Roofing and Siding has provided the lowest bid of $4,400. This does not include replacement of any damaged plywood that may be necessary.
  • John Medeiros asked permission to purchase a pallet of lawn fertilizer for the church and school property. Approximate cost of $1,000.
    • Frank Mauro moved for parish council to move ahead with the roof repair on the rectory and to construct the sidewalk from Wakita Avenue to Christ the King Church. Seconded by Amabile Dalmonte. Motion carried.
    • Frank Mauro moved that permission be granted to John Medeiros for him to purchase a pallet of fertilizer for the parish. Seconded by John House. Motion carried.

Finance

  • Comparative income statement and financial summary to March, 2010 were provided.
  • Initial total projections to date show that our income is down $20,000 as compared to last year.

Rectory Office

  • Begin planning now for the future of the existing rectory. What will it look like? What are the needs? What are the possibilities? Work can be done on a gradual basis.

Hall Committee

  • Tri-City needs to be contacted. Water is pooling in the bottom of the coolers.

Youth Room Update

  • Awaiting the installation of the fluorescent lights. Project nearing completion.

6. Business Arising from the Minutes/from the Floor

Summer Mass Schedule

  • Over the next several weeks additional masses will be added for the various parish celebrations taking place (ie. Our Lady of Fatima, Pentecost Sunday, Confirmation and Holy Communion)
  • A suggestion is made to begin the summer mass schedule sooner ie. the weekend of May 8 and 9. Would we really need 4 masses? Parish council agreed that we should begin the summer mass schedule sooner.
  • Does the community need 3 weekend masses? The community is growing smaller due to families leaving and the number of deaths that have been experienced. Thus far the parish is aware of 20 families that will leave over the coming weeks.
  • It is difficult to find ministers to fill the various liturgical roles at 3 celebrations.
  • Council members shared that it was discouraging to see so few people at Mass on some weekends. Would mass on Sunday evening be better? Sometimes Father Kenneth needs to be in Prince George for meetings and this would involve traveling late Sunday afternoon. Parish council members recognize that this change will be difficult for some people because people don’t like change.
  • Parish council members are in favour of continuing the summer mass schedule and making it permanent when September comes around.

Church Etiquette

  • Frank brought up that as a eucharistic minister he has seen people come forward to receive communion with gum in their mouths. Frank suggested that people need to be reminded about gum chewing. Perhaps Father Kenneth could do this.
  • Parish Council members thought that the bulletin may be a better tool for passing on this information and reminding parishioners of proper church etiquette.
