SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Today's Gospel teaches that God's Messiah had to suffer before entering into the glory of his risen life. The failure to grasp both aspects, suffering and glory, led many to reject Jesus. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus represent those whose hopes were dashed. If they had understood all phophecies, not merely those promising a glorious Messiah, they would have realized that Jesus' sufferings were necessary to God's plan. The disciples invite their companion to have supper with them, and in the breaking of the bread, a familiar gesture of Jesus, they finally recognize their Lord. He will likewise be present to future generations in broken bread. Because there is no need to see him physically, "he vanished from their sight."-----

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY: The 48th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, to be celebrated on 15 May 2011, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, invites us to reflect on the theme: “Proposing Vocations in the Local Church”. An excerpt of the letter follows: It is essential that every local Church become more sensitive and attentive to the pastoral care of vocations, helping children and young people in particular at every level of family, parish and associations – as Jesus did with his disciples - to grow into a genuine and affectionate friendship with the Lord, cultivated through personal and liturgical prayer; to grow in familiarity with the sacred Scriptures and thus to listen attentively and fruitfully to the word of God; to understand that entering into God’s will does not crush or destroy a person, but instead leads to the discovery of the deepest truth about ourselves; and finally to be generous and fraternal in relationships with others, since it is only in being open to the love of God that we discover true joy and the fulfillment of our aspirations. “Proposing Vocations in the Local Church” means having the courage, through an attentive and suitable concern for vocations, to point out this challenging way of following Christ which, because it is so rich in meaning, is capable of engaging the whole of one’s life. To read the letter in its entirety, please go to: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/messages/vocations/documents/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20101115_xlviii-vocations_en.html.

Heavenly Father, Bless your church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their live require. Through Christ our Lord, and the intercession of Mary, form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. Amen.

POPE’S PASTORAL WORKS: This collection was established by the bishops of Canada in 1970. The funds raised are divided into two, with one-third of the money going in support of Peter’s Pence and the remaining two-thirds to the charitable work of the Holy Father. What exactly are these causes? Peter’s Pence helps cover some of the operating costs of the Holy See so it can maintain its programs. The staff of the various departments and organizations, the upkeep of the grounds, architecture and artwork, the Holy Father’s pastoral service and basic household financing all incur expenses. The Papal Charities allow the Pope to contribute to various charitable causes around the world, particularly toward aiding the victims of war, famine and natural disasters. By contributing to the Pope’s Pastoral Works, the faithful of Canada truly give a universal dimension to their charity. This second collection will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29.

CHURCH SOUND SYSTEM: We have been experiencing problems with the church’s sound system, especially evident during Holy Week. We are not sure where the problem lies. It could be the amplifiers or the speakers. We are in the process of determining how to best go about finding a solution to the problem. Please bear with us.

A STATEMENT OF THE HOLY SEE PRESS OFFICE: The Most Reverend Raymond Lahey, former Bishop of Antigonish, has pled guilty to possession of child pornography. The Catholic Church condemns sexual exploitation in all its forms, especially when perpetrated against minors. Although the civil process has run its course, the Holy See will continue to follow the canonical procedures in effect for such cases, which will result in the imposition of the appropriate disciplinary or penal measures.

STATEMENT BY THE CCCB: The Most Reverend Raymond Lahey, former Bishop of Antigonish, has pled guilty to possession of child pornography. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops condemns all forms of sexual exploitation, especially involving minors, and continues to work to prevent such behavior and to bring healing to the victims and their families. Recognizing the confusion and anger that this case has engendered among many of the faithful, we underscore our pastoral concern for those who have experienced great pain as a result of these events. In a special way our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Diocese of Antigonish and all the Atlantic region. We reiterate the Catholic Church’s long-standing condemnation of the possession, distribution and use of child pornographic images in all forms, and renew our resolve to do everything we can to promote the dignity and respect of the human person.
