SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

Our first reading is one of the four "Servant Songs" in the Book of Isaiah. The "servant" is both an individual and someone who stands for all the people. The servant will triumph – but only after suffering. When Jesus comes to be baptized, John is confused. But Jesus reveals the Father to John and declares himself to be the "son' who alone knows God's will. When Jesus comes from the water, the Spirit comes in visible form. Jesus is revealed as "servant," "beloved," "chosen one" with whom God was "well pleased."

UPDDATE ON BISHOP: Bishop Wiesner was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital on Monday, January 3 for surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain caused by the buildup of fluid in the brain cavity. The surgery took place Thursday, January 6, and the surgeon is very optimistic for a full and rather speedy recovery. Bishop will remain in Vancouver for a few days and then be transferred to the hospital in Prince George for some time.
Before the surgery, Bishop Wiesner expressed that he was overwhelmed by the number of messages, get well cards, the prayers and all the good wishes he received. Please continue to pray for his healing. Messages can be sent to the diocesan office at Box 7000, Prince George, V2N 3Z2 or via email to bishop@netbistro.com

THANK YOU: A special thanks to everyone who participated in the children’s mass last weekend, especially to those who took on the various ministries. Our next children’s mass will be celebrated on Sunday, February 6 at 11:15 am.

MASS STIPENDS: Canada Revenue Agency now requires the Diocese (RCEC) to issue T4-A’s declaring income for Mass Stipends for priests. A number of new procedures will be implemented in the parish office to help us keep track of this for the diocese. We would appreciate parishioners assistance with the following: When offering a Mass Stipend to a priest for a mass offered, PLEASE RECORD YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER AND THE NAME OF THE PERSON FOR WHOM THE MASS IS OFFERED. You may give your mass stipend to the priest, place it in the collection basket and/or leave it at the parish office. The office will also be preparing special envelopes for people to use if they wish and these will be available in the church. This new procedure will go into effect beginning January 1, 2011.

WE PRAY FOR: Please keep in your prayers parishioner, Lydia Saulnier who died on Tuesday, January 4 after a brief battle with cancer. A memorial service will take place at a later date and time.

8th ANNUAL PARISH FUN SKATE: Will be held on Sunday, 31 January from 3 to 4:30 pm at the Kitimat Ice Rink. We have the rink all to ourselves so it should be a great time! We’ll provide an early dinner too! Pizza ($1/slice) and hot chocolate will be available for those of you who are hungry. Please sign up on the sign up sheet in the church foyer if you plan on attending. All are welcome!

BAPTISM OF THE LORD: With the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord this weekend, the Christmas Season comes to a close and we begin the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time next weekend. Helping hands will be needed to begin the process of removing and packing the Christmas decorations in the church. If you can lend a hand, please come out on Sunday, January 9 at 7 pm in the church. Many hands make light and quick work. Please come!

Stewardship Reflection

Immediately after his baptism, Jesus retired to the desert to spend time in prayer and fasting, in communion with his Father, as he prepared to begin his ministry. Jesus knew that he had a mission to fulfill, that he was called to share with others the gift of the Father’s love which he had experienced. He realized that he had received the mission from the Father, and that he had to rely on the Father’s gifts to fulfill the mission. Without his relationship with the Father, Jesus could not remain faithful to the Father’s will or fulfill the mission. Like Jesus, we are called to mission. Through our baptism we share in Jesus’ mission. We rely on our relationship with the Father and the gifts of the Spirit to live out that mission.
