SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
The Beatitudes, which we hear in this Gospel passage, are the heart of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus says that the ones who will be "happy" are those whom society has judges unhappy, even wretched. "The poor in spirit" see through the illusion of wealth and, with nothing else to rely on, come to depend on God. The sorrowing bemoan the sad state of a world that neglects God's wishes. The meek and lowly do not presume to act independently of God. Christians seek happiness by striving to imitate God's readiness to forgive. They are called to be single-hearted in doing God's will rather than making self-interest their primary motivation. They must make peace, doing everything in their power to bring this blessing that God holds out to people.

WORKSHOP ON THE REVISED ROMAN MISSAL
There has been much news in the Catholic world about the revisions to take place in celebration of the Mass. New translations are being prepared, which will mean a change in some of our prayers and responses. There are also some adjustments being made in how we celebrate the liturgy. While these changes may be implemented in Canada as early as Advent 2011, it may take a little more time to prepare the needed liturgical books and catechetical resources.
In our diocese work has already started to prepare for these changes. Priests were given a workshop last May and the Pastoral Life Directors and Pastoral Associates last June to review the principles used in making the changes. The first regional workshops were held in Prince George and Dawson Creek last fall.

The purpose of this workshop is to explore some basic foundations in liturgy, review the principles for the changes, and study the revised prayers (Greetings, Gloria, Creed, Eucharistic Prayers…). These workshops will be facilitated by Susan Campbell and Fr. Richard Beaudette, OMI. A resource package will be prepared for those registered

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SICK: In 1858, near Lourdes in southern France, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl. She told the girl to drink from a fountain in the grotto. The water from the still-flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power. Lourdes has become the most famous modern shrine of Our Lady. In May 1992, Pope John Paul II instituted World Day of the Sick and designated February 11, Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, as the date for its annual celebration. On this day those who are ill are encouraged to reflect on the Christian meaning of suffering and to recall God’s health-giving presence. We are also reminded that God often heals and restores life in unexpected ways. The day is also meant to recognize the importance of those who care for the sick and elderly, whether in a health care facility or at home. Catholic health care facilities have a unique role in witnessing to this healing ministry.
Anointing of the Sick and Elderly

CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN CANADA: A second collection will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 12 and 13. Catholic Missions in Canada works out of Toronto and was established for the poor mission parishes, mainly in the north of Canada, to be helped by the larger and richer parishes.

Proceeds from this breakfast and the next will help support the transportation costs of youth attending the Diocesan Youth Conference in Prince George.
