SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

In Christ, God shows the saving plan for the human race. We understand that plan when we appreciate who Christ Jesus is. The first reading speaks of a Servant of God who will not only restore the survivors of Israel after the Babylonian exile but will also be a light for all peoples and nations. The early Church saw Jesus as this servant who gives his life for all and brings about a new world. John speaks of him as the lamb of God who will take away the sins of the world.

MASS STIPENDS: Canada Revenue Agency now requires the Diocese (RCEC) to issue T4-A’s declaring income for Mass Stipends for priests. We would appreciate parishioners assistance with the following: When offering a Mass Stipend to a priest for a mass offered, PLEASE RECORD YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER AND THE NAME OF THE PERSON FOR WHOM THE MASS IS OFFERED. You may give your mass stipend to the priest, place it in the collection basket and/or leave it at the parish office. The office will also be preparing special envelopes for people to use if they wish and these will be available in the church. This new procedure will go into effect beginning January 1, 2011.

8th ANNUAL PARISH FUN SKATE: Will be held on Sunday, 30 January from 3 to 4:30 pm at the Kitimat Ice Rink. We have the rink all to ourselves so it should be a great time! Please sign up on the sign up sheet in the church foyer if you plan on attending. All are welcome!

Please take the time to read how your money has been at work. For more information, please go to www.devp.org.

BEATIFICATION FOR POPE JOHN PAUL II: Pope Benedict XVI moved his beloved predecessor one step closer to sainthood on Friday, confirming a miracle by John Paul II and setting May 1, the first Sunday after Easter, as the date of his beatification. Sainthood would follow after the confirmation of one more miracle. Benedict said in a decree that a French nun had been miraculously cured from Parkinson’s disease thanks to John Paul’s intercession. John Paul himself suffered from Parkinson’s. In a statement, Benedict said that a Vatican-appointed committee of cardinals, bishops, doctors and theologians had determined that the recovery of Sister Marie Pierre Simon from Parkinson’s was “miraculous” and “scientifically inexplicable.” “Santo Subito.!”

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 2011 ~JANUARY 18-25, 2011: Theme: One in the Apostles’ Teaching, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer (cf. Acts 2:42): The theme for the annual celebration of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2011 has been announced by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches. The theme for the 2011 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is One in the Apostles’ Teaching, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer. It comes from Acts Chapter 2 versus 42. For 2011, the churches in Jerusalem were the initial consultants to the Joint Working Group for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The Christians of Jerusalem call upon their brothers and sisters to make this week of prayer an occasion of renewed commitment to work for genuine ecumenism grounded in the experience of the early Church. No date, time, or place has been set for this year’s prayer service.
