DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE ~ AID TO THE PHILIPPINES: Development and Peace is currently in contact with its partner organizations in the region, including Caritas Philippines (locally known as NASSA), who are assessing the damage and needs of those affected. It is estimated that 34,298 families, totalling 167,460 people, are directly suffering consequences from the floods and over 88,000 people have taken refuge in evacuation centres. Eight cities and 13 provinces are touched by the floods, with the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City as the most affected. “Because Mindanao is not used to having storms like this, many people were caught unprepared,” says Bishop Broderick Pabillo, auxiliary bishop of Manila. “This may be a result of climate change - typhoons come at times and in places where they usually do not. This storm cost a lot of human lives and caused a lot of damage,” he reports. Currently, the main issue arising is a shortage of safe drinking water as main water lines have been washed away. Caritas Internationalis is currently preparing an appeal for humanitarian aid in the region. DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE is accepting donations from the Canadian public to go towards this appeal and those from other local partner organizations. Donations can be made by phone (1 888 234-8533), online at www.devp.org or by sending a cheque made out to DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE (please indicate Philippines Floods) to the following address: DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE
1425 René-Lévesque Blvd. W, 3rd Floor
Montreal, QC H3G 1T7. Parishioners may also donate by placing their donation in a white envelope marked “PHILIPPINES FLOOD” and placing it in the collection basket. Further fundraising may be done by the Filipino community, please watch the bulletin for more
TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
The twelve days of Christmas are not the twelve days before Christmas, but are instead the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25 until January 5), which is when the three Wise Men or Magi arrived on the scene.
ON THE 1ST DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME...A Partridge in a Pear Tree: The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, much in memory of the expression of Christ's sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered you under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so . . . ." (Luke 13:34)
ON THE 2ND DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME...Two Turtle Doves: The Old and New Testaments, which together bear witness to God's self-revelation in history and the creation of a people to tell the Story of God to the world.
ON THE 3RD DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME...Three French Hens: The Three Theological Virtues: 1) Faith, 2) Hope, and 3) Love (1 Corinthians 13:13)

(Matthew 5:3-10)
