SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
In today's Gospel Jesus begins his public ministry in Capernaum, a seacoast town in Galilee. There, the light of God's saving action begins to shine. Matthew also tells the story of the call of the first disciples. They seem to answer right away and leave everything behind.

Special Notice from St. Anthony’s School
As some of you have heard, the recent trend for Kitimat has been a decline in the number of children attending school in the community. This is typical for almost all school districts in BC, however in Kitimat recent job reductions in various sectors, most specifically at the Eurocan Pulp Mill, has exasperated the situation.
Both the public and independent schools in Kitimat have been affected. This has placed a financial strain on the operating budget of all schools, and St. Anthony’s is no exception. The response at St Anthony’s is to look at educational reorganization.
Planning for the reorganization at St Anthony’s School not only took into account the financial realities that we are faced with but also the current strengths and opportunities that St Anthony’s has and will continue to have. A strong volunteering, family and community based attitude of our parents; vibrant, supportive and active Parent Support Groups and School Council; a hard-working and dedicated teaching staff that are committed to providing excellence in learning opportunities for students within a solid Catholic Christian atmosphere.
What does educational reorganization at St. Anthony’s School look like? Specifically, shifting the way students are assigned to classrooms. This shift has meant a reduced need for staff at St Anthony’s and unfortunately this reduction will mean fewer jobs available to teachers for the 2011-12 school year. We will be reducing staff by three teaching positions beginning in September 2011.
Appreciating the difficulty of this situation, we ask that you keep staff, administration and school council in your thoughts and prayers.
For further information or if you have questions, please contact Superintendent Lynn McCracken at (250) 964-5642 or Principal Paul Cornthwaite at (250) 632-6313.
BEATIFICATION OF POPE JOHN PAUL II: The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops welcomes the announcement by the Holy Father that Pope John Paul II will be beatified on May 1, 2011. Pope John Paul II left a major mark on the Church and on the world. His vision and energy were a continuation of the Second Vatican Council and his encyclicals and other writings are a lasting source of inspiration and teaching. The impact of his magnetic personality remains at the centre of many happy memories. He continues to attract world-wide attention, not only in the number of pilgrims who visit his tomb each year, but in international celebrations such as World Youth Day which he founded 26 years ago. With his upcoming beatification, Pope John Paul II remains a sign and instrument of God’s Providence and a contemporary example of how Our Lord raises up shepherds and leaders for his flock.
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY ~ January 18 to 25: The 2011 prayers for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity have been prepared by Palestinian Christians, who chose as a theme Acts 2:42, "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." This theme is a call back to the origins of the first church in Jerusalem; it is a call for inspiration and renewal, a return to the essentials of the faith; it is a call to remember the time when the Church was still one. This year’s prayer service will be held at the Anglican Church on Sunday, January 23 at 7 pm. All are invited and welcome.
PLEASE PRAY FOR: Suzanne Gonzalez, formerly from our parish, (you may remember her as the pianist at the 9 and 11:15 am masses) sent this email to us with a request for prayers: This week we took Jesse (our 7.5 month old) to a Pediatric Neurologist. The doctor thinks that Jesse has a genetic disorder called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). We have to wait 2 weeks for a blood test to confirm this diagnosis. There is not a cure for this, and the life expectancy for this disorder is 1.5 to 2 years. We are praying for a miracle. Please pray for Jesse. He needs every prayer he can get. Thanks and God Bless!
CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN CANADA: A second collection will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 12 and 13. Catholic Missions in Canada works out of Toronto and was established for the poor mission parishes, mainly in the north of Canada, to be helped by the larger and richer parishes.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: Members of the Knights of Columbus will be serving up their delicious pancake breakfast following the 9 and 11:15 am Masses on Sunday, February 6. Proceeds from this breakfast and the next will help support the transportation costs of youth attending the Diocesan Youth Conference in Prince George.
CONFIRMATION AND HOLY COMMUNION: Families preparing their children for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion are reminded of the first family retreat on Sunday, February 13 from 2 to 4:30 pm in the church hall. Families will be receiving reminders in the mail in the coming week.
WORKSHOP ON THE REVISED ROMAN MISSAL
There has been much news in the Catholic world about the revisions to take place in celebration of the Mass. New translations are being prepared, which will mean a change in some of our prayers and responses. There are also some adjustments being made in how we celebrate the liturgy. While these changes may be implemented in Canada as early as Advent 2011, it may take a little more time to prepare the needed liturgical books and catechetical resources.
In our diocese work has already started to prepare for these changes. Priests were given a workshop last May and the Pastoral Life Directors and Pastoral Associates last June to review the principles used in making the changes. The first regional workshops were held in Prince George and Dawson Creek last fall.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SICK: In 1858, near Lourdes in southern France, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl. She told the girl to drink from a fountain in the grotto. The water from the still-flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power. Lourdes has become the most famous modern shrine of Our Lady. In May 1992, Pope John Paul II instituted World Day of the Sick and designated February 11, Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, as the date for its annual celebration. On this day those who are ill are encouraged to reflect on the Christian meaning of suffering and to recall God’s health-giving presence. We are also reminded that God often heals and restores life in unexpected ways. The day is also meant to recognize the importance of those who care for the sick and elderly, whether in a health care facility or at home. Catholic health care facilities have a unique role in witnessing to this healing ministry.
