REVISED ROMAN MISSAL: Why the changes to the Creed: The word “creed” comes from the Latin “credo” which means “I believe”. In the Nicene Creed we notice right away the change from “we believe” to “I believe”. When we express our faith using the Creed we are expressing not only what the Church as a whole believes but what we as individual Christians with a personal relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit believe. Some of the other changes might see minor, like the change to “visible and invisible” from “seen and unseen” but even these small changes reflect a deeper meaning. An object is ‘unseen’ when something else blocks our view of it, but invisible realities, like the angels for example, are always ‘unseen’ but that doesn’t make them less real! There are other changes too that more accurately reflect our faith that will need to be explained in more detail such as the words “consubstantial with the Father” and “incarnate of the Virgin Mary”. It might seem like we are being very picky about the words we use, but how we pray reflects and shapes our beliefs and so we ought to use words which convey as accurately possible our strongly held beliefs.

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK ~ February 11
Near Lourdes in southern France, about 150 years ago, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl. She told the girl to drink from a fountain in the grotto. The water from this still flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power. Lourdes has become the most famous modern shrine of Our Lady. In May, 1992 Pope John Paul II instituted the World Day of Sick and designated February 11, Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, as the date for its annual celebration. For those who are ill, this provides a special occasion to recall God’s tender presence in the midst of suffering. We never lose our dignity and value. God is always with us offering comfort and hope. For healthcare workers, this is a time to reflect on the deep significance of the work.
~Anointing of the Sick and Elderly

THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AND THE GLOBAL WHEELCHAIR MISSION: The Knights of Columbus and the The Global Wheelchair Mission have teamed up to help bring wheelchairs to those who lack freedom of mobility. The Global Wheelchair Mission purchases wheelchairs in bulk and delivers them by sea containers around the world. In 2003, the Knights of Columbus began participating in the Global Wheelchair Mission and sponsored 2,000 wheelchairs to be distributed in Afghanistan. Since then, Knights in the U.S. and Canada have sponsored the distribution of some 20,000 wheelchairs in Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, Oman, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, the United States and Viet Nam. For every donation of $150 received by the Global Wheelchair Mission, it can deliver a brand new wheelchair which would cost over $500 in a medical supply store. They are shipped by 100 to 280 wheelchair containers directly from the factory to the destination countries at no cost to the recipients. Members of the Knights of Columbus will be available after masses on February 11 and 12 to share more information.
